Pellets: Chinchillas should be free fed pellets, meaning they should have unlimited access to them. Make sure that the pellets are fresh by only using them within 6 months of the mill date. We get our own feed milled and do sell it if you would like to keep your chinchilla on the same pellets. If not, we recommend Oxbow (red bag), Mazuri, or rabbit SHOW feeds.

Water should be fresh daily with unlimited access

Hay: Chinchillas need hay or hay cubes in their diet, especially to help grind down their teeth. We actually recommend giving a handful of hay every few days vs every day. If given every day, chinchillas will start to use it as a potty and/or bed and not eat as much as they need. If they get it every few days, they tend to get excited and eat more of it, which is more beneficial to their health. They can have most hay types, including Alfalfa at any age.

Treats: Chinchillas cannot process sugar so it is important to not feed any fruits or veggies, even dehydrated. Seeds and nuts are too fatty (can cause liver damage) and also pose a choking risk. Many consequences of feeding unsafe treats do not happen for years, for example, seizures, blindness, and death with long-term use. So when you hear other owners swear they give these treats and their chinchillas are "fine", it just means they have not noticed symptoms, yet. Please, stick to safe treats only.

Chinchilla's have a very delicate digestive system and can't handle a sudden change in their diets.  Diet changes should be added gradually. Each chinchilla purchased from us will go home with a baggy of pellets to help transition to their new feed if not keeping them on ours.
